Tena

Tena, also known as San Juan de los Dos Ríos de Tena, is an Ecuadorian city; the cantonal capital of Tena Canton and the capital of Napo Province, as well as its largest and most populous city. It is located in the north-central part of the Ecuadorian Amazon region, on the eastern slopes of the Andes Mountains, crossed by the Tena and Pano rivers, at an altitude of 510 meters above sea level, and has a tropical rainforest climate with an average temperature of 22.7 °C.

It is known as the "Capital of the Orchid, Guayusa, and Cinnamon" or the "Capital of the Land of Cinnamon." The 2022 census recorded a population of 29,724, making it the 52nd most populous city in the country and the fourth most populous in the Amazon region, after Nueva Loja, El Coca, and Puyo. The city is the core of the Tena metropolitan area, which also includes nearby towns and rural parishes. This metropolitan area is home to more than 40,000 inhabitants and ranks fourth among Amazonian conurbations.

Its origins date back to the colonial era, but it was at the beginning of the 20th century, with the arrival of the Josephite Mission, that it experienced rapid population growth, eventually becoming an urban center that would later become one of the main urban centers of the region. It is one of the most important administrative, economic, financial, and commercial centers in the Amazon.

The city's main activities are commerce, agriculture, and tourism.
